Initiation Verses

In the chilly winter we gather at Buddha Gate,
To discover the source, to fathom the great Way.
Mysterious indeed, as the ocean billows without wind,
And wooden puppets see and sing.
How can worldly fetters tie up empty space?
A grand illusion, we trap ourselves in.
Turning the mind onto itself,
Every moment, you break from the mundane realm.
PiercingYou will know the timeless, the Original Face.

Good cultivators, for this Initiation of Zen-Seven Retreat, how shall the last verse go?

Where the illuminating One-mind never dwells,
All is illusive, all is real.

Completion Verses

Seven days of Zen passes in a flash,
Who senses the bitter and the sweet?

Cold winter storm, rage as it may,
The mirror of the mind is ever clear—
The five skandhas, its reflected images;
The four elements, mirages of self and others.

Like a dream, arising and ceasing by itself,
There are neither rainy nor sunny days.

Good cultivators, for this Completion of Zen-Seven Retreat,
how shall the last verse go?

Who says that prajñā shows no trace?
The sparrow’s song wafts on spring breezes.
