CHUNG TAI ZEN CENTER OF SUNNYVALE
2012 WINTER ZEN-SEVEN RETREAT
by Ven. JianYing
Initiation Verses (12/25/2012)
In the freezing cold winter at the end-of-the-year,
Frost and snow, covering the forest, conceal the road.
The wind carries the light fragrance of plum blossoms,
Indicating spring warmness is still in the world.
The alternation of coldness and warmness is just a form;
Busy with forms one turns to be blinded.
Introspectively clearing thoughts to enlighten oneself,
A Dark Cocoon will shine with boundless light.
Good cultivators, for this Zen-Seven Initiation, how does the last verse go?
Looking after the huatou* with a non-conceptual mind,
Cold and warm at ease, one comes to be just as it is.
Completion Verses (1/1/2013)
Lasting cold wind and freezing rain
Chill and blow the withered limbs,
Further sinking the gloomy mind.
Only when the spring sun comes to stay in the sky,
Warm and gracious fragrance of flowers will
Permeate the alienated land.
For what do the practitioners gather in the Zen Hall? It is for the completion of the Zen-7 retreat. If you have completed the retreat victoriously, it is like having a warm sun rising up to deliver the fragrance of flowers and the heart and eyes opened realizing spontaneous presence.
Yet, if you have not completed the retreat victoriously, then endure more the bone-chilling coldness and misery to further enhance your strength, and learn from the Bodhisattvas to awaken the spirit of plum blossoms. Regardless, you have after all finished the retreat.
Now, good cultivators, for this Zen-7 completion, how does the last verse go?
At all time take good care of your footing;
There is nothing lacking in drinking tea or having snacks.
